About The Nia Technique:

Nia is a mindful, barefoot, dance fitness practice that not only conditions your body in remarkable ways but also conditions your mind with the creative use of music and movement.  The practice, which started in 1983, is offered in over 50 countries and incorporates dance, the martial arts and the healing arts. Nia is safe and fully supports the ‘Pleasure Principle’ if it feels good, keep doing it, if it hurts, stop! Classes are exhilarating and over time produce positive change teaching us to move in ways that not only feel good but promote strength, flexibility, agility, stability, and mobility.

Nia is adaptable to fit all levels of fitness, providing three levels of intensity, a variety in range of motion, and endless user-friendly choreographic movement choices. Nia addresses the whole human being, not just the body by teaching us to move in ways that most benefit our individuality and creates pathways to an unlimited sense of our fitness potentials. If you haven't tried Nia yet you’ll be surprised by the energy blast you’ll receive and yet how much pleasure you'll gain while experiencing a great low impact cardio workout. New students are always welcomed and made to feel comfortable.

A classic Nia class follows a seven-cycle program:

  1. Setting the focus/intent: We focus on one aspect of the practice, it is woven artfully throughout the practice with a desired intent. This is set by the teacher.
  2. Stepping in: We enter and step into the experience, leaving all distractions and concerns behind.
  3. Warming up: This is where we prepare our body to move, warming up the joints.
  4. Getting moving: We move at a higher energetic pace, conditioning our body and cardiovascular system
  5. Cooling down: Still dancing and upright we use movements that cool down our body.
  6. FloorPlay: Using the floor, we play and condition our body using gravity, space, and the art of moving on the floor to become strong, stretched, defined and balanced.
  7. Stepping out: We seal the experience by consciously stepping out.
